Dell Announces Cloud and Technology Solutions Investments in Ireland

• Dell’s first Cloud Research & Development Centre, located in Dublin, will help customers move to cloud computing more efficiently
• Limerick-based Dell Solution Centre to help customers adopt advanced services and solutions is the first to open globally

DUBLIN and LIMERICK, June 7, 2011 – Dell today announced Dublin as the site for the company’s first Cloud Research and Development (R&D) Centre, and the company’s campus in Limerick as home to the first Dell Solution Centre built globally. These announcements were made in Dublin by Taoiseach Enda Kenny, Irish Minister for Finance Michael Noonan, and Jeff Clarke, vice chairman, Global Operations & End User Computing Solutions, Dell. These technology investments in Dell’s global solutions and services capabilities are supported by the Irish Government through the Irish Development Agency (IDA).

The Dell Solution Centre in Limerick was part of Dell’s previously-announced plans to invest $1 billion globally in new technology solutions and services while the Dublin Cloud R&D Centre is a new announcement. These facilities are part of the company’s investment strategy designed to help Dell customers worldwide innovate and drive business results through new solutions, services, and cloud-based delivery options. Recruitment is currently underway at both sites for world class software engineers, IT architects, engineers and developers. It is expected that a total of 150 people will be recruited across both sites in the next two years.

Dublin Cloud Research & Development Center

With today’s announcement, Dell is investing in a dedicated facility and staff to maximize the benefits of cloud computing by delivering IT flexibility, reduced operational costs, and accelerated time to market. As more information technology is delivered as a service through private, public, and/or hybrid cloud models, there will be a greater need for specialized knowledge and solution development. The Cloud R&D Centre is the first of its kind for Dell and will help develop the next generation cloud computing architecture on a global basis. The centre will act as a proof of concept laboratory, helping Dell customers to leverage their existing hardware platforms while driving innovation, new development work and thought leadership in the Cloud. The primary focus of the centre will be developing OpenStack based capabilities, Storage-as-a-Service Solutions and Software-as-a-Service enabling technology. The centre is currently hiring world class software engineers.

Dell Solution Centre in Limerick

The Dell Solution Centre in Limerick - the first to be launched internationally - is part of a global network of 22 centres with extensive customer engagement capabilities, designed to give access to Dell technology and solutions experts. The Centre will provide a backdrop for customers to learn about Dell’s industry-focused solutions and domain expertise. At the Dell Solution Centre, Dell experts work with customers to help them make better use of their technology budgets so they can invest less on managing their infrastructure and more on technology innovation to grow their business. Through proof of concept testing to make sure the solution will work in the customers’ environment and Architectural Design Workshops based on the customers’ business needs, the Dell Solution Centre will give its customers and partners another resource to help solve technology challenges.

Employees at the Centre will be involved in research and development work, IP development, IT architecture and engineering as they engage in proof-of-concept testing for customers. In addition, the new Solution Centre is playing a leading role in data management, identifying solutions to meet the challenges caused by the explosive growth of data online.

The Centre will also play a leading role in the development of virtual desktop solutions globally for Dell. Virtual Desktop Solutions will enable customers to support virtually any end-user computing device, anytime, anywhere in a cost-effective, secure and predictable way.
